Betting Odds Explained: Decimal Odds and Probability

Quick Summary

  • Decimal odds show total return per unit staked: odds of 2.50 return ৳250 on a ৳100 stake, including your stake.
  • Dividing 1 by the odds gives the implied probability the price represents.
  • Implied probabilities across a market add up to more than 100 percent; the extra is the bookmaker margin.
  • Examples here are invented; check the sports section for BEE999's real prices.

Odds are the language of betting, and understanding them is the single most useful skill for a new bettor. They tell you how much a bet pays and, read the other way, how likely the site thinks an outcome is. This guide from the official BEE999 partner site focuses on decimal odds, the format most commonly displayed, and uses made-up examples in Taka to show payouts, implied probability and the built-in margin.

Reading decimal odds

Decimal odds are the total amount returned for each unit staked, including the stake itself. To work out a return, multiply your stake by the odds. To work out profit, subtract your stake from that return.

For example, at odds of 2.50 a ৳100 stake returns ৳250, a profit of ৳150. At odds of 1.40, the same stake returns ৳140, a profit of ৳40. Lower odds mean the outcome is considered more likely and pays less, while higher odds mean it is considered less likely and pays more.

Implied probability

Every price carries a probability. Divide 1 by the decimal odds, and you get the chance that the price implies. Odds of 2.00 imply 0.50, or 50 percent. Odds of 4.00 imply 25 percent. Odds of 1.25 imply 80 percent.

This lets you compare a price with your own view. If you believe a team has a 40 percent chance of winning and the odds imply 33 percent, the price may offer value. If you believe 30 percent and the price implies 40 percent, it does not. Your estimate has to be honest and informed, though, and it can still be wrong.

The bookmaker margin

In a fair two-way market with equal chances, each side would be priced at 2.00. In practice the site might offer 1.90 on both. Add the implied probabilities, 52.6 percent plus 52.6 percent, and you reach about 105 percent. The extra five points above 100 percent is the margin, which is how the site earns money regardless of the result.

Three-way markets such as football 1X2 work the same way. Add the three implied probabilities and the total exceeds 100 percent. A smaller total means a lower margin, so a better price for you. The margin explains why even a correct opinion about who is favorite does not mean a profit.

Other formats and how to compare

You may also see fractional odds, common in British racing, and American odds with plus and minus signs. Fractional odds of 3/2 are the same as decimal 2.50. American odds of plus 150 also equal 2.50, because a 100-unit stake profits 150. If your site lets you switch formats, pick decimal and stay with it to avoid mistakes.

To compare prices, look at the same market and the same line across different matches or, if you have access to more than one site, across operators. Do not compare different handicap lines directly. Pair this with the sport guides, such as football betting, tennis betting and cricket odds.

How odds interact with your budget

Odds describe probability, not certainty. A bet at 1.20 loses one time in about six, and the loss is larger than the win. Chains of short-priced bets, as in a multi-bet, multiply those risks, because every leg must win. Set stake sizes in advance and keep them modest. The gambling budget guide shows how, and the responsible gaming page has more support. We have not confirmed BEE999's sportsbook, so look at the sports section for its actual prices.

Step by step

How to check any price in 3 steps

  1. 1
    Calculate the return

Multiply your planned stake by the decimal odds to see the total return, then subtract the stake for profit.

  2. 2
    Convert to probability

Divide 1 by the odds and compare the result with your own honest estimate of the chance.

  3. 3
    Account for the margin

Add up the implied probabilities across all outcomes in the market to see how large the site's margin is.

Questions Players Ask

What do decimal odds of 1.80 mean?

They mean a stake returns 1.80 times its value if the bet wins, including the stake. A ৳100 bet returns ৳180, a profit of ৳80. The implied probability is about 55.6 percent.

How do I convert fractional odds to decimal?

Divide the top number by the bottom number and add one. So 3/2 becomes 1.5 plus 1, which is 2.50. Odds of 1/4 become 0.25 plus 1, which is 1.25.

Why do the implied probabilities add up to more than 100 percent?

The extra is the bookmaker's margin. The site shades every outcome's price slightly lower than fair, so across the whole market the probabilities total above 100 percent. That surplus pays for the site's operations and profit.

Are higher odds always better?

No. Higher odds mean the outcome is less likely, not that the bet is more valuable. Value depends on whether the price is higher than the true chance justifies, which is hard to judge and never certain.
